China Imports

China Imports equal  American losses

China is one of America’s biggest importers.  As we go into any super market, toy store, and/or apparel store to find our favorite products with the label “made in China”.  But by buying these products we expose ourselves to many dangers. Now most of us don’t think too much about this, and we realize that lots of our products are imported from China, that’s the way it is.   Let’s pause and think about the impact this has on us; the American people.  Are companies being shut down because we now just import that particular machinery or product from China?  Are the products we’re purchasing made well?  The people making these products; are they being treated equally?  The food imported, is it safe and disease free?

These are important questions we need to ask as American people.  We were once the dominating force in the global economy.  Now we are the biggest importers of goods, but we are not exporting near what we used to.  There are reasons why we need to be cautious of all our importing from China. The two I want to focus on are: Loss of American jobs and the safety of food imported.

As Americans our job opportunities have suffered due to all the importing from China.  In total there are roughly 5.1 million jobs lost to China since 2001 and keep in mind that there are only 156 million people in total that are employed in the USA.

The Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning economic think tank in Washington, D.C., estimates that America  lost 2.7 million jobs as a result of the U.S.-China trade deficit between 2001 and 2011, 2.1 million of them in manufacturing. Wages of American workers have also suffered due to the competition with cheap Chinese labor, EPI says. A typical two-earner household loses around $2,500 per year from this dynamic. (US News)  This indicates we are losing jobs and money to China year by year.

Americans love to eat as is evident by the size of many Americans so now what do we do?.  We import a lot of our foods from all over the world.  China is one of these countries that we import food from but is this really a good idea?.   Importing food isn’t a bad thing; until you find out that the people you are importing from don’t have regulations, health codes, or a care for what they’re producing.   Food produced in China shouldn’t be purchased no matter how cheap it seems.  They have no health standards of FDA, and recently our animals are being killed from the importation of dog foods.  The Food and Drug Administration says 580 dogs and cats have died after eating jerky pet treats in the past few months, and imported pet food from China is suspected of causing the deaths. (FDA)  This fact alone shows that it is unsafe to eat foods brought in from China makes you wonder why any Americas would eat imported people food from China.

Sure we import a  lot of goods from China but this is a direct result of lowered quality in our products and a major cause of job  losses.  Not everything imported is bad, but we need to be careful as consumers and it seems reasonable to start with the biggest offender, CHINA!  As consumers, we drive what is made and sold.  We have the power to buy smart, have you checked that label recently?  Getting a better price on a T-shirt is one thing, but saving 60 cents on a bottle of spices that may have chemicals poisonous to our bodies is not worth the risk! Wake up America and smell the poison.
