Terrorist Attack During Boston Marathon

Boston Bombing

At this year’s running of the Boston Marathon runners were crossing the finish line just past the four hour mark when it happened. A loud explosion rings out followed by a cloud of smoke. People are instantly stunned at what has just happened, though not being exactly sure what they had just witnessed. About fifteen seconds later another explosion down the street goes off, immediately everyone realizes what is apparent, an act of terror is occurring right in front of them. Not knowing if there will be more explosions, chaos ensues as people clear the grandstands and try to evacuate the area.  The Boston Marathon bombing is just another reminder that we as a nation can never be too vigilante. Just when we start to think we’re safe the unthinkable happens.

The runners in this race train for years in order to qualify so they can partake in this historic event. This race is their super bowl, their Olympics, and for this senseless act of terrorism to take place is just horrific. The Boston Marathon bombing shocked the entire nation and people are demanding answers. In this day and age it seems as if you cannot go anywhere and feel safe anymore. From the movie theater shooting in Aurora Colorado to the mall shootings in Portland Oregon anywhere that has a large congregation of people seems to be an easy target.

As more pictures and videos of this horrific attack surface it is hard to look at all of the innocent victims that were affected and to see the sheer terror and panic on their faces as they were being rushed away from the scene. The heartbreak and devastation is something that will stay with those individuals for the rest of their lives. A day that started out as a day of joy and celebration turned into a day that this nation will not soon forget.

This world we live in can be a crazy place at times, but when something like the Boston Marathon bombings happen you truly see what people are made of. No, I am not speaking of the individual or individuals that planned out and executed this attack. I am speaking of the hundreds if not thousands of police, fire, ems, military personal and civilians, even those that were running in the race that ran towards the bombing site to begin rescue efforts. That more than anything else is what we should think of when we reflect on this tragic event. The heroism displayed that day is something that no one in the country or world for that matter should forget.

What, if anything, can be done to prevent such events like this from happening? That I cannot answer. All we can do is prepare for the unexpected and never become complacent no matter what our surroundings may be.
