10 car bombings in Iraq cause 240 deaths

Iraq Bombings

A massive amount of deaths have occurred this past Monday in areas of Iraq, totaling to about 240 deaths in the past week, which is more than has been seen in years. The pattern of what has been happening is similar to a civil war in the country that took place between 2005-2006. Baghdad suffered the worst of the attacks that took place Monday where 10 car bombs killed at least 65 people and injured about 150 people. The car bombs blew up in open air markets and throughout Shiite neighborhoods. Most people who live in these areas depend on the daily trip to the market and reay have no type of food storage.

No one has claimed responsibility of these attacks that have been occurring but, the assumptions of what is causing these random acts of violence varies, some saying that al-Maliki’s government is provoking sectarian tension by becoming aggressive towards the Sunni’s. Others are saying that the wide-spread tension is because of the rise of violence in Syria. The fact that Monday was the most deadly day in Iraq in more than 20 months raises concerns of them returning to a sectarian war.

Sunni’s minorities began protesting the mistreatment at the fault of the Shiite-led government which led to the worsening sectarian tension.  Mass demonstrations began this past December, but they were originally peaceful demonstrations but after a security tightening on a Sunni protest camp on April 23, the number of attacks increased dramatically.

Not only were there the car bombings, but also this past Tuesday there were several other smaller attacks around the area. A suicide bomber set off a vest of explosives in the city of Tarmiyah, which is North of Baghdad. Following this attack, there were militants that began firing at the Iraqi troops. This attack killed three soldiers and wounded nine.

The residents of Baghdad want to know how long they have to keep living like they are in the violence and the lies of their government. Seeing how this country is torn apart and constantly in fear of what is to come, preparing for the worst seems even more important. Survival is part of their everyday lives and they never know what may happen.
